Kareena was born to Sindhi-speaking Babita (nee Shivdasani) and Punjabi-speaking Randhir Kapoor on September 21, 1977 in Bombay, India. They has an elder brother, Karisma.

They is born in a relatives that have been actors for generations, including her paternal great-grandfather, Prithviraj Kapoor; her grandfather, Raj Kapoor; her paternal uncles, Shammi, Shashi, Rishi, and Rajiv; as well as aunt, Neetu Singh, & Jennifer Kendall, the wives of Rishi and Shashi respectively. On her maternal side, her grandfather, Hari Shivdasani, and aunt, Sadhana, have been actors in their own rights.
As a child they studied in Jamnabai Narsee School in Juhu, Bombay, and thereafter was enrolled in Dehra Dun's prestigious Welham Girls' Boarding School. Then they re-located to Harvard for about three months to take a work in Information Expertise and Microcomputers. On her return to India, they joined the Government Law College in Churchgate, Bombay, but left it after year, to enroll in the Kishore Namit Kapoor Acting School.
Her dad, Randhir is protective towards his daughters and wanted both of them to keep away from acting, get married, and settle down, as per the Kapoor relatives custom. This led to irreconcilable differences between her parents, ultimately leading to a divorce, with both sisters leaving their dad to live with their mom.

Co-starring alongside Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, Kapoor starred as Pia, an independent-minded medical student and Khan's love interest. On acting alongside Khan, Kapoor revealed that it was "a dream come true" and further stated that her journey as an actress was "finally complete". The feature received much critical devotion and emerged as the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time, grossing 2,026 million (US$44.98 million) at the Indian box office. It also did well internationally and earned over 690 million (US$15.32 million), the second biggest Bollywood success of all time in the overseas market Rediff.com opined that Kapoor dazzled with her "brief role, and even though a lot of her spunk seems significantly Jab We Met in tone, she lights up the screen when she is around." During the 55th Filmfare Awards, Kapoor received another Best Actress nomination for her role.


In 2010, she appeared in the romantic comedy Milenge Milenge, a production that had been delayed since 2005. The feature garnered negative reviews and poor box office returns.


Kapoor's role was small and was not well-received. She next took the supporting role of the career-oriented Shreya Arora in We Are Family, the Hindi adaptation of the 1998 Hollywood release Stepmom. Prior on commencing work for the project

At the end of the year, Kapoor reunited with director Rohit Shetty for his sequel to the 2008 release Golmaal Returns. Like its predecessor, the project was met with mixed reactions from reviewers, though became the most successful entry in the Golmaal film series, earning more than 1,000 million (US$22.2 million) domestically.




For her portrayal of the tomboy Daboo, Kapoor went on to receive several Best Actress nominations at a number of award ceremonies, including Filmfare.A review in MiD DAY described her as "[the film's]...real hero...who takes the story forward."kapoor is scheduled to appear in a leading role in Anubhav Sinha's science fiction Ra.One.The film, which stars her alongside Shahrukh Khan and Arjun Rampal began filming in India in March 2010.
